Josef Albers was a German-born American artist, educator, and color theorist whose groundbreaking contributions to abstract art fundamentally transformed modern painting and art education. A pioneering figure of the Bauhaus movement and one of the most influential artists and teachers of the twentieth century, Albers dedicated his career to exploring the interaction of color, perception, geometry, and visual experience through painting, printmaking, drawing, and design. Albers is best known for his seminal Homage to the Square series, a decades-long exploration of nested geometric forms that demonstrated how color relationships shape perception and visual experience. His influential publication Interaction of Color (1963) remains one of the most important texts on color theory, continuing to inform artists, designers, educators, and creative professionals around the world. Through disciplined compositions grounded in precision and experimentation, Albers revealed that color is inherently relative, changing according to its surrounding context rather than existing as a fixed visual fact.
